HOW TO WRITE AN ESSAY?
The essay must express the writer's personal opinions, thoughts, ideas, valuable suggestions, and criticism about something. Whatever reflections, convictions, or impressions a subject evokes in the mind of the writer its methodical, harmonious, well-balanced and personal presentation in writing remains the chief purpose of an essayist. The general tendency among the students is that they never express their original ideas but only content themselves with borrowings. It is just the point where the shoe pinches. Minds differ as fingerprints differ from man to man and every independent personal opinion is many times more valuable than the repetition of others' views. A new approach is always desirable. In an essay, the personality of the writer counts most. Its importance from an examination point of view is very significant. It is a crucial test of a student's ability. Its scope is unlimited. Anything will serve as a subject for the essay. The subject does not matter but what matters is clear thinking, vivid understanding, a novel mode of presentation and expression, and good command over the language. To write a good essay, a student must read essayists like Bacon, Addison, Steel, Charles Lamb, Macaulay, Emerson, Hazlitt, and De Quincey. His knowledge should be wide and all-around. He must use quotations here and there because they have a beauty of their own. He must go about the world with eyes wide open. Thinking is also essential. He must write often to write well because practice alone will make him a good essayist.
The essay should have artistic unity, design, and proportion of parts like a well-finished work of art. The topic for writing the essay should be very carefully selected and thought over several times.
Having carefully understood the subject, necessary material should be gathered and the limitation of the subject decided. The material should be arranged systematically The introduction should be attractive and striking. The essay should be divided into paragraphs. Remember that a paragraph is a complete unit of thought. Every paragraph should be properly linked to every other paragraph. Repetition of words and ideas must be avoided. Every paragraph should begin with a key sentence. Avoid any exaggeration and irrelevant detail.
Paragraphs should neither be too long nor too short. The end should be short and natural. A few striking sentences, a climax, or a brief summary would provide an effective conclusion. All narrative and some types of descriptive essays are written in the past tense; while reflective and argumentative essays are written in the present tense. Due regard should be paid to spellings, punctuation, and grammatical corrections. Revise your essay carefully. The steps and errors should be corrected. Revision is very essential. Some time should be allotted for it.
